HELCOM assessments indicate that the total nitrogen depositions on the Baltic Sea in 2010 will be higher than in 2003, even with the fulfilment of the targets for nitrogen in the Gothenburg Protocol to the UNECE Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution and the EU NEC Directive.
The increase is mostly due to a predicted increase in agricultural activities and shipping. The share of airborne nitrogen deposition originating from agriculture is, according to the scenarios, increasing due to expected growth in agricultural production.
