MRSA is now present on two out of every three pig units in Denmark, according to a new study — and a spot check has revealed every fifth pack of Danish pork carries the bacteria.
Denmark’s food and agriculture minister Dan Jorgensen says previous efforts to reduce MRSA in pigs have been insufficient and the bacterium is more widespread than previously thought.
MRSA CC398 can be transmitted from livestock to humans. This variant accounted for only two percent of all MRSA cases in 2007 but this year it is up to 35 percent.
